Frequently asked questions about 3M™ Boron Nitride Suspension Cast-M
3M™ Boron Nitride Suspension Cast-M is used as a release agent and protective coating for metallic components in the aluminum industry. The coating reduces molten aluminum adhesion and protects surfaces against wear.
Cast-M was specifically developed for metallic surfaces. Typical applications include:
- steel components
- casting tools
- metal troughs
- metal molds
- metallic contact surfaces in aluminum casting systems
The boron nitride coating:
- prevents aluminum adhesion
- reduces cleaning effort
- extends service life
- improves surface quality
- allows multiple casting cycles with a single coating
Hexagonal boron nitride is not wetted by molten aluminum. This creates a highly effective release layer between the melt and the metal surface.
The coating is suitable for high-temperature applications in aluminum processing:
- up to 1,400 °C in vacuum
- up to 1,400 °C in air
Apply the suspension by spraying, brushing or dipping, depending on the component geometry.
Before application, surfaces should be clean and free from oil, grease and dirt.
Before application, surfaces should be clean and free from oil, grease and dirt.
The suspension is water-based and contains no organic solvents. This allows easy application and cleaning.
Before application, the suspension appears gray. After drying, it typically forms a white to slightly yellowish boron nitride coating.
