Frequently asked questions about 3M™ Boron Nitride Suspension Cast-C

3M™ Boron Nitride Suspension Cast-C is used as a release agent and protective coating for ceramic components in aluminum processing.
Typical applications include:

  • troughs
  • nozzles
  • stoppers
  • slide gates
  • floats
  • valves
  • hot-top rings
The coating reduces molten aluminum adhesion and protects ceramic surfaces from wear.

Cast-C was specifically developed for ceramic and refractory substrates. For metallic surfaces, 3M offers a separate grade called Cast-M.

Boron nitride combines excellent release properties with high temperature resistance:

  • prevents aluminum adhesion
  • simplifies cleaning
  • reduces wear
  • extends component service life
  • improves the surface quality of cast products

The coating remains flexible over a wide temperature range. In aluminum casting applications, it is typically used at temperatures between approximately 680 °C and 800 °C.
Depending on the application, service temperatures up to 1,000 °C are reported.

The inorganic binder system allows coating thicknesses of up to approximately 1 mm without flaking.
This makes Cast-C suitable for heavily stressed areas.

The protective layer reduces direct contact between molten metal and ceramic surfaces. This helps minimize wear, buildup and thermal stress, often resulting in longer service life.

Boron nitride has a crystal structure similar to graphite and offers comparable lubricating and release properties. Unlike graphite, however, boron nitride is white and is not wetted by molten aluminum.

The suspension appears gray before application. After drying, it typically forms a light-colored to white boron nitride coating, making visual inspection easier.
